Between the Oceans

Hi everyone,

Just got back to Shelter Bay (the marina at Colon, the Atlantic side) after my first trip through the Canal crewing on another boat. I went through on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day and it was a very different way to spend the holidays for sure. I'll tell the full story after I take Carmen Sandiego through, but what I will say now is that the canal is one hell of a ditch and I don't envy those who dug it out!!

I'm scheduled to go through on the 28th or 29th, so I'm quite excited to be headed for my home ocean.

Hope you all had an amazing Christmas and Happy New Year!

Cheers,

Ryan

  1. Glad to hear that your transit of the Canal is imminent. It would be a bonus if you could alert us to the time so we can watch you on the Panama Canal Web-cams. http://webcams.pancanal.com/common/photo/webcam-hd-miraflores.html

  2. Loved your last post! Thank you for answering most of my questions in your write-up. The storm sounded pretty exciting, though I suspect you downplayed how difficult it really was.

You are probably through the Canal as I am writing this. That was smart of you to crew on someone else's boat before you tried your own. I hear it can take days to get all the right paperwork approved before you go; how did that work out?

I've been so inspired by your trip that I'm signed up to take sailing lessons in San Francisco Bay next weekend!

  3. Ken-I checked out your reference to the Panama Canal webcam. At first I didn't think it was working, then I pulled it up the next day and saw a big freighter go through--the MSC Aniello. Very cool! Thanks
